EXHIBITION RECOMMENDATIONS

Animation cels started out as a by product of making animation for the big screen. A means to an end for film production, a hand painted animation cel was the way to get a cartooned image to move on film. There is little about them that was intended to last. Made with mostly commercial materials, cels, backgrounds, drawings and cel setups prepared for distribution during the classic days were a souvenir of the filmmaking process.

Now, they are seen as much more, in that they are an artifact and an object that connects us to another time. A time when people, not machines, colored drawings on clear cel sheets, and a time when stories with genuine heart endeavored to elevate children's entertainment through lush full bodied visuals.

Today's surviving pieces of animation art were made with a variety of materials manufactured in the 20's on up. Certain pieces of animation art are more sensitive to light, temperature, humidity and even relocation. This even includes certain pieces of art from certain sequences in certain films.

For this reason, professional exhibition advice is a must when considering a short or long term exhibition of animation in a new or permanent space. It can make all the difference.
